About

Syrie Funeral Home was founded by Carol Syrie, Sr.("Mr. Winnfield", as he was called by the older people), with the support of his wife, Sedonia Gray Syrie. Originally from New Iberia, LA, Carol and Sedonia moved the family to Lafayette, LA in 1952-53 when Carol became Manager of Winnfield Funeral Home of Lafayette. Carol also became a burial insurance salesman for Winnfield Life Insurance Company. After several years of managing Winnfield Funeral Home, Ben D. Johnson, owner of the funeral home, agreed to sell the Lafayette funeral home to Carol and allowed him to rename the funeral home Syrie Funeral Home. After Carol's retirement, Wesley Syrie, son of Carol and Sedonia, took over management of the funeral home. Both Sedonia and Carol Syrie, Sr. died in 1993. From 1995 until 1998 Syrie Funeral Home was closed because of the widening of Twelfth Street and the need to give up a portion of the property to the city. In 1998 there was a restructuring with the formation of the Syrie Corporation, the heirs of Sedonia G. and Carol Syrie, Sr., who took over ownership of the funeral home. A new structure was built under the direction of the family owned and operated corporation. Syrie Funeral Home, Inc. is truly a "Family Affair." Family members serve as receptionists, funeral directors, embalmers, funeral assistants, etc.
